2016 is finally here! I am super elated because my birthday is just right around the corner. But, that’s for another post, let’s talk a bit about New Year Resolutions. A new year is typically associated with a new chapter, a new beginning in our lives. We endeavour to put aside old habits forming new ones, out with the old in with the new. This time of year is synonymous with making New Year resolutions, but before the end of January rolls around, most are all just a distant memory. Whatever your resolutions are for 2016, here are some tips to increase your likelihood of success this New Year.

1.       Don’t make too many resolutions

You are not Supergirl or Superman, there is only so much one can accomplish. The likelihood of success increases with a more focused goal than a plethora of different goals. Focus on one or two goals to which you can add others as you accomplish what you set out to do.  In 2015 I created a long list of items I wanted to accomplish. I wanted to start a sport, learn French, lose weight, and start blogging. A few of these I started at some point but all uncompleted. In 2016 year I endeavour to start small, my sole goal this year is a focus on “growth”, personal development. A review of before and after at the end of the year will help determine whether I have accomplished my goal.

2.       Set SMART goals

Your goals should be specific, measurable, actionable, realistic and timely. It’s not as simple as saying, I want to be more active in 2016. Here is an example of a SMART goal, I want to be able to run the Scotiabank 5k run in July 2016. If you are someone that is already somewhat active, it’s a goal that fits the criteria of SMART, its specific, measurable, actionable, realistic and timely.

3.       Stay Motivated

With the high percentage of New Year resolutions that gets dropped within the first month of the year, we can attest that it is hard to stay motivated. This year create accountability whether it is through family, friends, social media or even through an app. Instead of focusing on the trials, focus on the end result such as how good you will look in that new bathing suit come summer. You can also use motivational videos and quotes to keep the fuel burning.

I hope you will find these tips helpful. 2015 may have had it bumps along the road, make 2016 a year in which you set about accomplishing your New Year Resolution. What’s your resolutions for 2016?
